Top new features of the AI-laden iOS 18.1: Apple had focused on making Apple Intelligence work mostly on-device to enhance user privacy, as it announced at WWDC 2024.
However, some complex tasks are managed through a private cloud compute powered by Apple Silicon, in which the company claims that user data will never be stored or exposed and independent experts can also inspect the code to verify these privacy claims.
What new AI features are available with Apple Intelligence on iOS 18?
Writing tools
There is now a system-wide set of compatible writing tools across multiple apps, including Mail, Messages, Pages, and more.
These tools can be used to polish and refine text through features like rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing.
Mail app upgrades
Apple Intelligence can now detect and prioritize time-sensitive emails, as well as provide features like email summaries without opening each message, and an AI-based Smart Reply feature on Mail and even the Messages app.
New Siri
Siri has become more natural and can understand more complex commands, including taking a pause while the user is speaking or changing a sentence mid-sentence.
In addition, users can also type commands after enabling the “Type to Siri” mode by double-tapping the bottom of the screen.
There will also now be a flashing light on the edge of the screen when the voice assistant is active.
New Photos app
The Photos app has a natural language search feature, where, for example, users can find the moment they are looking for by asking something like “Maya is skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt.”
Users can also remove unwanted objects from photos using the new AI-based clean up tool. It can automatically detect unwanted objects or people. Users can also manually circle what they want to clear.
Minimize interruptions
A new mode called ‘Minimize interruptions’ has been introduced that lets only important notifications through by using AI to analyze the notifications.
Call Recording and Transcription
The new iOS 18.1 brings the option to record and transcribe phone calls, as well as provide AI-generated summaries of the process within Notes and the Phone app.
