Sarai Kale Khan Chowk renamed to Birsa Munda Chowk on 150th birth anniversary of ribal leader
A Tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda
In a big declaration, the Union Minister of Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday said that the Sarai Kale Khan Chowk will now be known as Birsa Munda Chowk. The move came ahead of the 150th birth anniversary of the iconic leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda who was one of the first tribal leaders of India to take up the mantel against colonial oppression in the form of British rule.
A Symbol of Tribal Resistance
A national icon of India, the true story of Birsa Munda is none other than that of a courageous soul who led the Munda tribe in rebellion against the British colonial rule. He was for the rights of native people and against forceful eviction from their ancestral lands.
A Spiritual Leader
He was a religious leader who acted as a freedom fighter, establishing the Birsait religion – an absolute mix of beliefs from the natives and elements that formed other faiths. He is thus considered to have been deified by the majority of the tribe communities.
A Lasting Legacy
It made the Central Government declare November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas or Tribal Pride Day. Every year, the day is celebrated in the form of commemoration for the cultural legacy and hardships borne by India’s tribals.
Renaming Sarai Kale Khan Chowk, along with a consecration of the statue of Birsa Munda at Delhi, are strong statements that bring recognition and celebrate the rich legacy of the great leader. Initiatives will ignite future generations, demanding them to learn of his life and the continuation of the struggle for justice and equality.
