Rajasthan lab attendant performs ECG after watching YouTube tutorial, video goes viral

Surprisingly, YouTube, having its enormous collection of user-uploaded tutorial videos, has ended up as a source even for medical professionals seeking instruction in the care of the patients. A recent video viral from Satellite Hospital of Jodhpur in Rajasthan has raised a scare as a lab attendant here scanned the ECG in the patient while referring a tutorial.

In the video, relatives raise their objections with one cautioning, “Scanning him without the proper knowledge might risk his life.” The attendant justified himself saying that he had no choice but to do what he did because of a staff shortage during the Diwali holidays. “Everything is in place; the machine will work,” he told them.

The video fast spread across social media. Different users gave their opinion in the social media comments, such as a user wondering if perhaps the attendant might not have been certified by an ECG technician and yet another remark that to get an ECG does not require very specialized training other than being able to know how to interpret it, while yet another user, lamented “Irony: Certified technicians like us are out of the system.”

We will conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action,” said Dr BS Jodha, principal of the affiliated medical college.
